he's been a soldier for a thousand years.
He'a a catholic, a hindu, an atheist, a jain,

and he knows he shouldn't kill,
and he knows he always will,

he's fighting for the usa,
and he's fighting for the russians,
and he's fighting for japan,
and he thinks we'll put an end to war this way.

he's the one who must decide,

But without him,
how would hitler have condemned him at labau?
without him caesar would have stood alone,

És alt o baix, és prim o gros
lluita amb missils o a cops de roc,
pot tenir els seus cinquanta anys o tenir-ne sols disset.
Serà soldat durant mil anys.

És catòlic és ateu, és hindú o és jueu budista, baptista o inconscient,
ell sap que matar és un crim i també que ens matarà,
a mi per tu germà i a tu per mi.

Està lluitant per França, està lluitant pel Canadà.
Lluita pels Estats Units, també lluita pels russos,
també lluita pel Japó, creu que així la guerra acabarà.

Lluita per la democràcia el socialisme i qui sap què.
Ell diu que és per la pau de tots, ells és qui ha de decidir
qui ha de viure o de morir: només fa el que li manen des de dalt.

Però sense ell no hagués pogut Hittler tirar endavant,
i Cèsar s'hagués quedat tot sol; ell és qui ofereix el cos perquè faci de punyal.
Sense ell tots aquests crims no podrien ser.

És el soldat universal, és el culpable de tot.
Les ordres no venen de gaire lluny: les hi donem tu i jo,
germans que no ho veieu aquest no és el camí per anar a la pau.
